Winterport Winery brings that age-old quote to vibrant life with its selections of wines, gourmet food items, and accessories.
When the winter months finally pass, there’s nothing like getting out for a hike in Maine. This spring, take your Wine Country Picnic in a backpack along for a delicious spread when you’re ready for a little break. The backpack comes complete with tablecloth and napkins, silverware, glasses, and dishes. It also features an insulated pocket for little treats like cheese and crackers. An insulated pouch, located on the side, stores your favorite bottle of Winterport Wine - the dry blueberry, perhaps? Remarkably priced at just $32.59, these packs make a great gift, but pick one up for yourself too.
Other little items throughout the store make a special gift for yourself or any wine enthusiast you know. Bundle Tip Top wine corks which allow you to lay your bottles on their sides for refrigerator storage) and wine glass charms in a gift bag. There’s a tempting assortment of snacks to pack in your picnic backpack: jams, crackers, and an herbed wine and cheese dip mix, muffin mixes, most of which are made or grown locally.
But don’t forget the wine. It is, after all, the cornerstone of Winterport Winery. Winemaker Michael Anderson has produced a line of fruit wines that go far beyond a sweet dessert accompaniment. These are sophisticated wines include a dry blueberry, that Anderson says is like a chianti classico, the perfect wine with homemade pasta and marinara sauce.
The Flying Dutchman is a fortified blackberry wine “finished in a port style,’’ while Raspberry Rain perfectly compliments chocolate desserts. And who wouldn’t want to fine a bottle of wine and chocolates in their Christmas stocking?
Other wines include strawberry, cranberry, apple, pear, and even blends. Ranging between $8.95 and $14.99, these wines are humbly priced, but definitely on a grand scale.
The Winterport Winery’s shop, tasting room and art gallery are open April through December, Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
